The Constitution of Kenya 2010 gives prominence to Citizenship under Chapter 3. The Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 2011 implements this chapter and sets out eleven routes to Kenyan citizenship, each handled on its own prescribed form.
Eligible for a citizen of Kenya by birth who ceased to be a citizen by acquiring the citizenship of another country before the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

A foreigner married to a Kenyan citizen for not less than 7 years is eligible for registration (the marriage must be solemnised under a recognised system of law).

A foreign national married to a Kenyan citizen for over 7 years is eligible for registration on the death of the Kenyan spouse.

A foreign national lawfully resident in Kenya for a continuous period of at least 7 years is eligible for registration as a citizen.

Any person with no enforceable claim to citizenship of a recognised state, lawfully living in Kenya continuously since 12 December 1963, is eligible for registration.

A person who voluntarily migrated to Kenya before 12 December 1963 and has lived in Kenya continuously since is deemed lawfully resident and eligible.
